“A pair of star crossed lovers

The COVID-19 pandemic reminded us all of the importance of community support, but also inspired the Paperback Theatre team to comically reinterpret old favourites for our post-COVID world.

This was a fast-paced, funny and moving adaptation of Romeo & Juliet. The twist for newcomers and long-time fans of the classic tragedy was the production’s efforts to weave social distancing guidance, masks and gloves into the fabric of the performance. Social distancing ultimately reflected the play's themes about forbidden intimacy and being kept away from those you love.

Romeo & Juliet was first produced as part of Paperback’s own Little but LIVE! festival in Moseley Park, during the summer 2020 as a hopeful response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

AUDIENCE FEEDBACK

A vibrant, pacey and crystal clear stripped down Romeo and Juliet for difficult times

What an absolute pleasure to bathe in the absolute brillaince of R&J this afternoon. Thrilled if was my first theatre outing in 6 months - here’s to many more!

So lovely to see live theatre again in the beautiful surroundings of Moseley Park. Great abridged Romeo and Juliet from Paperback Theatre with funny and clever use of Dire Straits, Bruno Mars and Steps.
